I've been reading the youngest kid-pups library book about Collie dogs like me. I learned that my breed comes from the area of northern England and Scotland. Dogs like me were brought to that area by Roman invaders around 500 BC. We got our name from the sheep we worked around. "Col" is an old Anglo Saxon word that means "black". Scotland's black faced sheep were called "colleys". The dog that herded and drove them was called a "colley dog". As the years passed, the spelling was changed to collie. We are herding dogs, which is why I like to herd the cat and the kid-pups.
(My Mum is a writer and she says I have to give credit to the book I got this from. It is called "Collies" by Stuart A. Kallen and is published by Abdo.)
